The town became enraged and crying freedom of speech rights whenofficials attempt to move the statue to a local sports arena from themuseum where it rests.. However, because the statue was in the image of alow-class movie hero, the museum insisted that the statue was not art, butrather an icon of sports and entertainment and should be moved. This upsetthe people of the city, who then petitioned until the statue was replacedon the museum steps. This is a great example to start off this book,because it reflects the cultural struggles between the hi-class and thelow-class entertainment worlds in America throughout recent history. Entertainment. The book approaches the subject from a mostly worldlypoint of view at first. It talks about ratings and labels forentertainment, but I must question if that is the way a Christian shouldlook at it.If a rating is placed on it, that will not make the problemgo away. As a Christian community, we should take up the fight to abolishthe problem. This is also tricky because what do we determine is good orbad? If we use previous examples from American history, as learned inthe first few chapters of the book, more problems will be created thansolved. In the first few chapters of the book, Romanowski gives awonderfully repetitive history of theater, vaudeville, and other forms ofthen questionable entertainment such as opera houses and beer gardens. The conflict begins with the rise of low culture entertainment thatappeals to the working class, the immigrants, and the un-sophisticatedpopulace. This made the distinction between high and low cultures,high (symphonies, fine art, sculpture, etc..) being for the elite andwell-educated, while low was associated with the lower, working classthat included immigrants. Through the chapters, Romanowski illustrates theinflation of this division, as well as the conflict between the people andthe Church regarding entertainment. Chapter three discusses how the peopleof America were searching for a unifying principle or common faith thatwould hold the nations people together. What they found instead was anuprise in immorality and a decrease in the high culture. This couldmean only one thing: low culture was bad. Theater, Opera Houses,Vaudeville, and Nickelodeons all got their bad connotations from this erabecause of their appeal to the lower, less moral people of society. Therefore, the Church had to place a moral stance against this apostasy ofthe holiness of American culture, and place a ban on all low forms ofentertainment. The churchs prohibition of amusements could not suppresspeoples desire for it. (p 84) As hard as the Church tried, theirsuppression of the amusements didnt stunt their growth in any way, in factit only made it worse. Eventually, the high forms of entertainment(theater, etc) were losing money and patronization began. More money wasgiven to the amusements than to the Church. The entertainment of thesetheaters then had to stoop to the lowest moral level to appeal to thebroadest array of audience. Eventually, the Church gave up its fightagain the theater and began to use it as a tool for the Church, as theylater do with all forms of media that they have protested, such astelevision, radio, music, and even comics. The entire film industry was created for the solepurpose of making money, not as an artistic venture, so should Americansplace a different set of discernment standards on movies since they have nofreedom of artistic liberties? Perhaps not. This is a difficultquestion to answer because everyone has different morals and values fordiscernment. Romanowskis method is an interesting approach to thissituation. He believes that we should embrace all art and pop culture withthe same preconceptions and learn to filter out that which is harmful tous and grow artistically and spiritually from the good stuff we havefiltered out. He also gives me the impression that we should just ignoresome of the things that we disagree with because its art, its freedom ofspeech, its just a piece of entertainment. However if we ignore it, willit go away? Probably not. However, the problem of pop culture and societyversus the modern Christian will not solve itself, and will not go away inany short time.

The program JROTC, had all 3 sociological perspectives, Functionalist Perspective, Conflict Perspective, and Symbolic Interactionist Perspective. We had at one point covered all 3 of these perspectives, our instructor wanted us to see a different view on how society/things work. We would be given different tasks, on a lower grader level (let) would ask us what to do in a situation. Being an older cadet in JROTC we would have to look out of our perspective and into theirs. I have a life event that uses all 3 perspectives perfectly. I’ll use our military ball for this perspective, the senior class is tasked to schedule and run the ball. That goes form calling in to hold the event to setting up the tables in an organized fashion. We divided up the tasks, I was placed into the seating arrangement and overall management of ball events. This meant I had to see where the table s where placed and where the seniors (let 4) cadets will be siting. The seniors will be spread out to keep younger cadets quite. For managing the ball events was more of a last minute job, I had to make sure everyone was here and at their place they were assigned. I was to be feed information from the other committees as the weeks came to a close. So that way I would know what’s going on and when. We came close to the last week and about half of the committees came to me with what they were doing. That went smooth, no time of arrivals bumped over one another nothing. Then about 2 groups came to me that needed someone, the same person, to get something at the exact time. I noticed it right as it happened. I told them one of you have to find a new time or a new driver. They began arguing about why their group need to change, why can’t the other one. So I jumped in and said ill drive somebodies stuff up there that morning to help out. That was the only major bump in the road of planning it. During the ball we had our respected ceremonies, color guard posted the colors, the honor guard did the POW MIA table ceremony, and then we proceeded to have our guess speak. During our guess speeches, the younger cadets started to talk. We planned ahead of this and had some Let 3 and 4 (juniors and seniors) go up quietly and ask them to be quite or we would escort them out. After the guess spoke, it was time to eat. The guess would go out first and would go to a separate area to eat, while the cadets ate then about 45 minutes later, the music, dancing and other festivities start. There was at one point a small argument that happened between a cadet and their date. I was asked to talk to the male cadet about what happened while a female talked to his date. The problem was resolved within minutes of it starting. There were more minor problems while the ball proceeded. The way some of the cadets and their dates dance was taken into question. Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th President of the United States of America, was born on January 9, 1913 in Yorba Linda in Southern California to Francis A. and Hannah Milhous Nixon.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Nixon had a very rough childhood. Due to the illness of Richard’s brother, his mother was rarely around. Richard’s father was a very loud man who would beat his sons and enjoyed arguing with everyone, especially when it came to politics. Richard had to help out at the family gas station and grocery store while he was a college student. Nixon grew up harboring resentment toward people who were born into families and privileged and could trade on their social connections. Nixon attended Duke University and graduated from law school there. After graduating, Nixon applied to become an agent with the FBI and was rejected. He was also rejected when he applied to various major law firms. Eventually, Nixon found a job in a small law firm in Southern California. Nixon served as a Naval Officer during World War II. Afterward, he began to climb up the political ladder. He began by first serving in the U.S. House of Representatives and then in the Senate.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Throughout Nixon’s career, he used smear-politics to gain victory by viciously attacking his opponents. He used the public’s fear of communism during the Cold War years to his advantage by accusing several of his political enemies of being soft on communism.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In 1952, President Eisenhower agreed to allow Nixon to serve as his running mate although he never really liked him. This was because Nixon would help Eisenhower win California. Six weeks before the election, a bombshell was dropped on the campaign. An illegal secret political fund of Nixon’s was discovered and publicized. Although Nixon was encouraged to withdraw from the ticket, he, instead, went on television and delivered a speech not about receiving bribes or money but about a little dog that his daughter had named Checkers. Eisenhower was convinced to keep Nixon on the ticket when he heard of the positive response of the American people to the â€Å"Checkers Speech.† Eisenhower and Nixon later won the 1952 election by a massive landslide.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In 1956, Nixon was, once again, on the Republican ticket as the vice-presidential candidate. Summary Richard Milhous Nixon’s life started out being kind of tough but he eventually went on to be able to do great things such as becoming the President of the United States of America. Throughout his life, Richard Nixon did many things that were very great and very impressive but he was also responsible for doing many things that were definitely not so great and impressive. Nixon had a very impressive career when it came to foreign affairs but his career was far less impressive when you look at what was happening in the United States. If Nixon hadn’t been quite so paranoid and insecure in his own abilities, he would have made a far better president. After all, it was his paranoia and his insecurities that led him to forming the â€Å"plumbers† and to authorizing the things that ended up going on at the Watergate complex, which eventually led to his resignation from the Presidency.
